The legal requirements of getting married abroad: 4 things you need to know

- As well as ensuring that your marriage is legal in the UK, you’ll need to do your homework on the legal requirements in the country of choice. You must understand the  legalities surrounding getting married in their country, the process, and the documents needed for your marriage to be accepted there (and back home). You may need to verify the following:

- That you and your partner meet the minimum age and same-sex laws

- That all of your documentation is certified and valid (everything should be at least 6 months from the expiration date)

- That you adhere to the legal residency requirements

- You will need to acquire and travel with the relevant documentation to ensure your marriage is legal in each country. This can include passports, birth certificates, and any proof of name changes.

- You may have to obtain a Certificate of No Impediment (CNI). This is to confirm that there are no legal reasons why you cannot get married abroad. 

- There are very few marriages or civil partnerships that are not valid in the UK after taking place abroad. Your marriage should be valid in the UK if you comply with all legal requirements for the country in which you are getting married. Before you leave, make sure that all your bases have been covered by the local authority in the country where you're getting married.
