The area itself is filled with sandy beaches and secluded coves, with Grand Baie offering a host of restaurants offering local produce and freshly caught fish. Wander along the Grand Baie Bazaar and sample the many locally made handicrafts on display or maybe treat yourself to snorkeling with the giant turtles. Hire a catamaran to cruise around Gunner’s Quoin, Flat Island, and Gabriel’s Island, and witness the hammerhead sharks and other game fish. Finish the day with a visit to one of the many casinos, or dance the night away in the many vibrant bars this lovely area has to offer. Next door you will find Port Louis, the capital city of Mauritius with its French colonial architecture and 19th-century Champ de Mars horse-racing track. Steeped in history the Blue Penny Museum is well worth a visit, focusing on the Island’s colonial and maritime past and proudly showing its culture.
