If you are thinking of having a destination wedding, Italy should be right at the top of your list of destinations. Sultry Mediterranean evenings, excellent wine and delicious cuisine make it the perfect country in which to tie the knot, and there can be no more perfect place than Positano in which to do so, a village so famous for its romance and charms it has been written about and had its praises sung from noted visitors as varied as Napoleon Bonaparte and John Steinbeck.
Nestled on the cliffs overlooking the famous Amalfi coast, Positano is a village of many charms. It can be easily reached from nearby Naples, and is a great base from which to explore towns and villages along the Amalfi coastline, such as Ravello, Sorrento and Salerno, which are a little bigger than Positano, but no less enchanting. You can also visit the ancient city of Pompeii from Positano, as well as Mount Vesuvius, which so famously destroyed it.
Positano itself is a jumble of winding streets, pastel-coloured houses, piazzas and trendy boutiques, and it is a popular destination for sun seekers from all over the world.
There is no other hotel in Positano that so well represents its long history and timeless glamour than Palazzo Murat. Dating back to the 18th century, this historic building was chosen by the King of Naples, and brother-in-law to Napoleon Bonaparte, Gioacchino Murat, as his summer home after he fell in love with its serene atmosphere and wonderful views of Positano. This sense of history runs deep at the hotel, with a traditional items of furniture and nods to classical décor throughout.
Palazzo Murat’s courtyard is one of its best features, and was so beloved of Murat’s wife, Carolina, that the hotel has named the garden for her. Guests can sit and relax over breakfast or a book, with a cappuccino or an aperitivo at their side, under the beautiful swathes of bougainvillea, bignonia and frangipane, and the citrus trees that grow there.
The hotel restaurant, Al Palazzo, serves traditional Campanian and Mediterranean cuisine with a contemporary twist, and has a marvellous wine list to choose from. Guests can sit out in the garden under a canopy of orange blossom, and enjoy wonderful home-cooked fare. That many of the restaurant’s ingredients are grown in and harvested from the garden adds to the Palazzo Murat’s sense of tradition.
The rooms range from those with a garden views to deluxe suites with sea views, and feature classical décor and traditional furnishings, such as maiolica tin-glazed pottery tiling and antique furniture. The special deluxe room is believed to be where the King of Naples himself used to sleep, so choose to stay here, and you will truly feel like royalty.
